MSC has officially inaugurated their new purpose-built cruise terminal in Barcelona with the first call of Explora II. The event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by key figures, including Spanish government officials, local authorities, and MSC Group executives such as Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of the Cruise Division, Gianluca Suprani, SVP Global Port Development for MSC Cruises, and Anna Nash, Global President of Explora Journeys.
Vago commented: “Barcelona has been a strategic partner for MSC Group for over four decades, and for MSC Cruises, over 25 years. Our commitment remains strong. The new terminal is not only an investment in modern port infrastructure but a reflection of our alignment with the city’s vision for a more sustainable and balanced tourism model, while bringing significant economic benefits to the region. We are excited about this new chapter with the Port of Barcelona and look forward to welcoming guests from MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys to enjoy the advantages of this modern, innovative, and sustainable facility.”

Designed by Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura, the terminal boasts a range of features, including retail areas, waiting lounges, and an exclusive VIP lounge. The design incorporates environmentally sustainable elements, such as solar panels, natural light optimisation, and a rainwater collection system. The terminal has been awarded Gold LEED certification for energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. In 2027, shore-to-ship power connectivity will be introduced, enabling ships to reduce emissions while docked.
MSC Cruises plans to use the terminal for five ships in summer 2025, with Explora II also making regular calls.
