“Stop the engines.” The final command words used to officially ‘kill’ Pullmantur’s Monarch on the beaches of Aliaga, Turkey.
In videos filmed by workers both on the ship and in the scrapyard, we can see the final moments unfold as the once mega-cruise ship charges up the beach before grinding to a halt, all while the ship screams through her horn.
We can hear one of the officers say she is a strong ship; confirmation that the 1990-built ship is being scrapped prematurely due to the current challenges the cruise industry is facing.
Monarch and Sovereign were both sold for scrap by owners Royal Caribbean Group, after Pullmantur filed for reorganisation in June.
Sister ship, Sovereign has also now been beached next to Monarch this morning. She too will be stripped for parts and scrap.
RIP Sovereign of the Seas and Monarch of the Seas. Thanks for the memories. You two were the largest and most innovative ships of the time. Sovereign and Monarch started the big ship movement made a lot of passengers and travel agents happy.
