Will you be docking in Zeebrugge on your upcoming cruise? This article will tell you how to get from your cruise ship docked in Zeebrugge to the cultural centre of Bruges, plus give you a few tips and recommendations along the way.
As you disembark your ship in Zeebrugge, you’ll see a long line of coaches waiting on the quayside. Several coaches will be for the organised shore excursions arranged by your cruise line, and some will operate a shuttle service between the port and the seaside town of Blankenberge. Depending on your cruise line, this will either be complimentary or a pay for service. Walking around the quayside is not permitted, so a free bus is in operation to take you to the port gates. From here it is just a short walk, turning right, to the nearest tram stop. Where you’ll be able to travel to Blankenberge, Oostend, and further afield.
The shuttle service takes around 20 minutes, and drops you off across the road from the train station. Trains run every hour and can be busy during peak times. Head inside the ticket office and ask for the cruise special to Bruges. It’s five euros for a return, and you’ll save yourself around 4 euros compared to the ticket machine outside.
The train takes 15 minutes and once you arrive it’s about a 20 minute walk into the main square. We recommend walking through the park near the station, as this will lead you to one of the main shopping streets, and a few local eateries. If you are unsure of the way, simply follow the crowds.
Of course Belgium, and in particularly Bruges, is famed for delicious chocolates, so you’ll find yourself gazing in plenty of shop windows as you explore the city. Bruges is also popular for its lace making and tea rooms. And a visit to Belgium isn’t complete without having a Belgian waffle!
The city is best explored by foot, but cycling is a popular transport option, so be aware of your surroundings and keep off the cycle paths. Buses run from the station to the main square in Bruges, and tourists are particularly fond of the horse carriage rides and canal tours.
