Aranui Cruises has unveiled plans to launch a second ship, the ‘ARANOA’, set to sail the waters of the South Pacific from 2027. This expansion marks a significant step for the company, extending its unique cargo-cruise model to the remote Austral Islands.
The ‘ARANOA’, meaning “a great awakening” in Tahitian, will be staffed by a wholly Polynesian crew and accommodate 198 passengers across 93 cabins, with 62 boasting private balconies. The vessel will feature a range of amenities, including two restaurants, two bars, two whirlpools, a boutique, a spa, a fitness centre, and an on-board tattoo salon.

Aranui’s marketing, communications and operations director, Romina Wong, emphasised the company’s commitment to supporting remote island economies. “Aranui Cruises has a proud heritage of helping in the development of the economies of remote Tahitian Islands by supplying the islanders of the Marquesas, and we are delighted that through the launch of Aranoa in 2027, we will be able to continue this tradition by supplying the remote Austral Islands and their residents with the provisions they require the most.”
She highlighted that this venture represents the first regular tourist exploration of the Austral Islands. “In addition to contributing to the development of tourism in the Austral archipelago, we hope to provide new economic opportunities for the islanders by showcasing to our passengers these magnificent and untouched islands, vibrant landscapes, and rich culture, as well as promoting important inter-island exchanges.”

Currently under construction in a Chinese shipyard, the 116-metre (381ft) long and 21-metre (69ft) wide mixed passenger/freighter vessel is designed with sustainability in mind. It will feature a diesel-electric propulsion system with an advanced azimuth system, an environmentally friendly antifouling coating to optimise fuel efficiency and reduce air pollution, and propeller designs to minimise acoustic impact on marine life, including whales. Stabilisers and a dynamic positioning system will ensure smooth and secure navigation, even in rough seas.

For over 40 years, Aranui Cruises has provided cultural immersion experiences, transporting passengers and cargo to the Marquesas Islands aboard the ‘Aranui V’. While the ‘Aranui V’ will continue to serve the Marquesas, the ‘ARANOA’ will introduce a new chapter, offering regular cargo-carrying cruises to the Austral Islands.
Located in the southern region of French Polynesia, the Austral Islands – comprising Rimatara, Rurutu, Tubuai, Raivavae, and Rapa – offer a haven of peace, untouched by mass tourism. The islands are renowned for their wild landscapes, lush green mountains, turquoise lagoons, and white sandy beaches. Archaeological sites reveal a rich pre-European history, and the islands maintain strong traditions, particularly in weaving and storytelling.
Passengers embarking on the round-trip cruise from Tahiti will have the opportunity to visit picturesque villages, learn about islanders’ livelihoods, and meet local craftspeople, experiencing an authentic and unspoiled Polynesian culture.
