Costa Victoria is set to be scrapped after 24 years in service. The ship has arrived in Piombino, Italy where the dismantling process will begin.
Rumours circulating online earlier this month, suggested the ship would be used as an accommodation ship for shipyard workers, but Piombino’s mayor, Francesco Ferrari, has confirmed the ship will be scrapped.
Costa Victoria arrived in Piombino. I was there to welcome the arrival of this colossus of the sea and its captain, Gianfranco La Fauci, in the city, as the ship will be prepared for demolition. The port of Piombino and its industries represent enormous potential for the development and revitalization of the city’s economy and the arrival of this ship is yet another important confirmation of this

Costa Victoria is likely to be the first of many ships destined for the scrapyard over the next few months and early part of 2021, as cruise lines look to shed capacity and reduce running costs, caused by the disruption of Covid-19.
Carnival Corporation has already announced plans to retire 6 ships this year, as scrapping becomes ever-more favourable over a drying up second hand market.
