On 15th May 2015, myself, and Harry Cotterill, toured Voyages of Discovery‘s Voyager at the port of Harwich.
We embarked the ship shortly before midday, where we were greeted by the Food and Beverage Manager, Head of Housekeeping, and one of the Dance Captains.
We began our tour by viewing the cabins on board. The first cabin we visited was #7204, a Balcony Suite with Spa Bath. The size of the suite was very impressive for a small ship. There are eight of these suites on board Voyager, and all feature a balcony, flatscreen TV, lounge area as well as champagne on arrival, fresh fruit, flowers, and daily canapés. There is also a large circular whirlpool bath.
We then moved on to visit #7200, one of the Owner’s Suites at the very front of the vessel. These rooms are the largest suites on board Voyager. Very similar to the balcony suites, these rooms boast a large walk in wardrobe.
Next on the tour was a standard Balcony Cabin. These generously sized cabins are spacious and comfortable. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow plenty of natural light to flood the room. Just like the Owner’s Suite, and Balcony Spa Suite, the balcony cabins feature champagne on arrival, fresh fruit, and daily canapés.
We then viewed a forward facing Junior Suite. Featuring a large picture window, these cabins offer a unique, and interesting view overlooking the bow of the ship. The cabin was spacious, bright, and featured a large bathroom with a bath, and overhead shower.
Finally, we had a look at an Inside Cabin. The room was fairly standard, but nonetheless still pleasant and spacious.
After viewing a variety of cabins, we began our tour of the public venues on board. Starting on the Bridge Deck, we had a look at the pool area. The large circular pool is a good size for a small ship, and two hot tubs are located next to it. The lido bar is also within close proximity, serving refreshing drinks, and colourful cocktails. Lots of tables surround the pool area, and is the perfect place to relax in the sun. Just a short walk away is a complimentary tea, and coffee station.
The Sunset Bar located at the top of the ship, is an intimate bar, which transforms into the ships nightclub at night.
The rather small gym overlooks the aft of the ship, but still features most of the popular gym equipment such as treadmills, and rowing machines.
Also situated at the aft of Voyager, directly below the gym is the Veranda Restaurant. This casual buffet is home to a selection of great food, and the traditional afternoon tea service. The Veranda also boasts an al fresco dining area, offering unbeatable views, perfect for those sunny days. The overhead awning provides shady comfort while eating.
The Discovery Restaurant is the main dining room on board, serving fresh, exciting dishes from the ports of call the ship is visiting. With open dining, guests can also choose when and where to eat, as well as who to sit with.
The library offers a wide selection of books as well as daily quizzes and puzzles. The comfortable sofas make this area a great place to relax with a good read.
Close by is Scott’s Lounge, probably the heart of the ship. Situated in between the Discovery Restaurant and the Darwin Lounge, this plush venue is the perfect place for a drink before or after dinner or perhaps the evening’s show. In addition to the bar, talented artists perform live piano music during the evening.
The Darwin lounge is the main show lounge on board and is home to the nightly production shows, talented guest acts as well as expert lecturers.
The Lookout Lounge located at the very front of the ship is another popular music venue on board. The modern decor, and live music make this a pleasant place to enjoy the evening on board Voyager. Four internet stations are located in the corner of the room, offering guests access to the ship’s WIFI, allowing them to surf the web and catch up on emails.
Our final visit was to the very stylish reception and shore excursion desks. We picked up a copy of the daily ship newsletter, before concluding our tour.
Voyages of Discovery’s Voyager is a lovely small ship. Despite its size, the vessel has a variety of amenities found on larger ships, but with its 540 guest capacity, it still retains the intimate quality. Although only built in 1990, the ship was a lot more modern that I was expecting.
