In December 2016, Fred Olsen Cruise Line’s Black Watch emerged from a multi-million pound makeover. Virtually no part of the ship was left untouched. If you’ve never cruised on Black Watch before – and even if you have – now is the best time to experience what this grand veteran has to offer! Here are just five reasons why I recommend you try a cruise on Fred Olsen’s Black Watch…
Black Watch launched in the early seventies, but despite this, all cabins aboard the ship have everything for the modern traveller. Fred Olsen have found a nice balance between modern comforts and traditional décor. You may be surprised to find out, as was I, that all cabins feature USB charging sockets (heck, even some of the latest modern cruise ships don’t have them yet!) Cabins on Black Watch now have refrigerators and safes as standard, plus interactive televisions, so you can watch various movies and check your onboard account. Bathrooms have a modern new look, with a handy shelving unit to tuck away your toiletries.
What was once probably the most dated restaurant as sea, is now a bright and refreshing dining venue. Gone are the dark blue and red chairs, replaced by pastel yellow, blue and green ones, in addition to new bench seating. In the middle of the restaurant is a simple, yet dignified focal point, made up of glass panels.
The Black Watch Room
A new addition, The Black Watch Room replaces the Braemar Garden Cafe. For a nominal charge, you can choose to dine in the alternative restaurant for an intimate, à la carte meal. On the menu are succulent prime cuts of steak, delicious seafood and mouth-watering desserts!
I’ve always found The Marina Theatre such an impressive venue for a small ship like Black Watch. Although aesthetically very little has changed in here, the cinema is now able to screen 3D movies.
Elsewhere around the ship, various public venues have received TLC to bring venues up-to-date. The Lido Lounge has been redesigned, improving seating space, and new floor-to-ceiling glass windows can be opened to create an open-air dance floor!
